Data is everywhere. At Datanyze, we made our name by collecting the best technographic and firmographic data, but we never lost sight of the fact that our customers would always need to interact with it in other platforms, and even data outside of our platform. For the former, we built a host of performant integrations with CRM and marketing automation systems, and for the latter, we built Tags.
What are Tags?
A Tag is simply a keyword or term associated with a specific domain within the Datanyze platform that is preceded by a number sign or hashtag ("#"). A domain can have many Tags and a Tag can be associated with many domains.
Where Are Tags Visible?
In the Datanyze web app, Tags can be marked as "active" or "inactive". Inactive Tags are only available in Targeting and Alert Filters, whereas active Tags are available not only in Targeting and Alerts Filters, but also next to domains throughout our platform and Datanyze Insider, CSV exports, our API and integrations.

Tags can also be viewed, added and removed from the Datanyze Insider Chrome browser extension:

Finally, Datanyze's Tag data can be ported back into other systems by using our CSV export, API or one of our integrations.
The Three Types of Tags
We offer our customers the ability to create three types of Tags:
1. User Generated
User generated Tags can be created by one of your account's users in one of two ways:
Uploading a list of domains using our CSV Import module.
Tagging domains individually within the web app or Datanyze Insider.
These Tags can be private to the user who created them or shared with others at their organization.
Automated Tags are managed by Datanyze as part of our Salesforce integration and are kept in sync so you never have to worry about uploading new lists. There are two types of automated Tags:
Standard Tags are automatically created by Datanyze by default when connecting to a customer's Salesforce environment. There are currently 5 different standard automated Tags. The first, #SFDC, is associated will all domains in the Salesforce instance, and the other four -- #sf_leads, #sf_accounts, #sf_contacts, #sf_opportunities -- are associated with the domains in their respective objects (Leads, Accounts, Contacts, Opportunities).
Custom Tags are created by a user (by default, only Datanyze users who are account owners and/or have Salesforce admin privileges can create custom automated Tags, however this can be enabled for other users through our advanced user management module) and can go deeper than the object-level limitation of standard Tags. Creating custom automated Tags is easy and only takes a few seconds.
Curated Tags are created and maintained by Datanyze and allow users to quickly see if a domain is associated with a publicly available list. Here are the top 10 curated Tags in Datanyze:
Now that you know what Tags are and how they work, let's dive into some use cases.
1) Named Accounts: Custom Automated Salesforce Tags
Because of the massive amount of data provided by the Datanyze platform, it's important to be able to quickly tell if a data point affects your account (so you know to strike while the iron is hot) or if it affects one of your colleagues (so you can make sure not to step on anyone's toes).
If your organization uses a named accounts model, setting up Datanyze's custom automated Salesforce Tags can allow your team members to interact with their named accounts within Datanyze. To set them up, simply click 'Create automated Tag' from the Tags page and fill out the form for each of your reps:
Once they are set up, a rep can quickly filter Targeting reports and Alerts with their Tag:
2) Events: User Generated Tags
Networking events and trade shows can drum up a lot of interest, usually in the form of a large stack of business cards with barely legible notes scribbled across them. With Datanyze's user generated Tags, you can ensure you continue to get value out of them long after the event doors have closed.
If the stack isn't too large, you can go through the cards and add Tags in Datanyze domain-by-domain. Otherwise, take the website or email address from the business cards and add them to a spreadsheet, import them into Datanyze as a CSV, and add a Tag (i.e. Dreamforce2016). Once you've done this, you'll be able to filter your Targeting reports by your newly created Tag or quickly identify if a domain is on your list. Whether you're looking through your recent Alerts, prospecting a website using Insider, or checking out a record in Salesforce, you'll be able to quickly see that you met someone at Dreamforce 2016 who works for that company.
3) Marketing Campaigns: Curated Tags
While most marketing teams that use Datanyze's technographic data are already powering targeted outreach campaigns based on the technology usage of their leads, a few have started using our curated Tags to send targeted campaigns to subsets of websites like the Fortune 1000 or YCombinator companies.
By syncing Tags into HubSpot or leveraging the Datanyze Marketo webhook, marketers are able to hit their leads with relevant, compelling content. For example, making sure to include enterprise case studies in an email to the Fortune 1000 or startup case studies in an email to YCombinator companies can make a major impact on engagement.
4) Churned Customers: Custom Automated Salesforce Tags
No companies enjoy having churned customers, but that doesn't mean they can't continue to learn from them. By adding a #ChurnedCustomer Tag into Datanyze using a custom automated Salesforce Tag, departments across the company can gather insights. For example:
- Sales can see if a churned customer recently dropped a competitor
- Customer success can run a campaign to win back business from churned customers
- Product can see which competitors their churned customers are going to most often
