CDN Market Share Update December 2013

December 10, 2013 Jon Hearty

It has been an exciting time in the CDN market this year and things are really heating up as the year nears its end. Less than one month after Akamai acquired Velocious Networks to bolster its enterprise CDN efforts, Verizon has announced its acquisition of EdgeCast (disclosure: EdgeCast is one of our customers).

According to our Market Share data, EdgeCast is the 4th most popular CDN company for websites with an Alexa rank of at least 1 million with a market share of 8.5% (only top 10 CDN companies shown – percentage is of total customers of top 10 CDN companies combined):

As you can see, however, when looking at the top 1,000 websites according to Alexa, EdgeCast ranks second with an 7.9% market share:

Akamai and EdgeCast are clearly very popular amongst the web’s biggest properties, whereas Amazon tends to be common for smaller websites.

We would like to congratulate EdgeCast, one of our biggest customers, on their recent acquisition. As the CDN market consolidates, we will continue to analyze market share data and other interesting metrics.
